Socket Proxy
The Socket Proxy plug-in is intended to replace the network sniffer in certain circumstances.
As you may know, WinPCap-based sniffers cannot intercept WI-FI traffic. You have to buy a complex solution, such as AirPCap. Setting up the connection over a proxy often solves the problem.
Another example would be regular ethernet networking, but with the two devices you're trying to debug located outside of your local network segment, beyond the ninja of a sniffer.
Another reason for using a proxy rather than a network sniffer is clarity of representation. Using a socket proxy, the log would look exactly the same as if you were using the Connection Socket plug-in, as opposed to the packet-based representation of a sniffer.
