Debug Trace Monitor

Debug Trace Monitor in action

Tracing is most often used as an additional debugging technique, along with a whole plethora of other techniques provided by debugger.

Often, however, using a debugger is impractical or impossible. Imagine receiving a bug report from a beta tester, and failing to reproduce that error on test machines in your office. You cannot expect a beta tester to run a full-fledged debugger for you; they might not even have the knowledge required. In such a case, a debug log can save the day. You give your tester a special build of the faulty module, with debug tracing enabled, along with a tool to log the traces. He runs the software, crashes it, and sends you the resulting log. You then analyze it, add additional traces if necessary, and repeat until you isolate the problem.

The Debug Trace Monitor plug-in provides captures debug tracing information from applications. Upcoming releases will provide support for kernel tracing, filtering & highlighting and more.
